You’ll want to take advantage of the tax credit opportunity that has become available recently. On February 17th 2009, with the signing into law of “The American Recovery And Reinvestment Act of 2009” the level of credit available for certain energy efficient improvements has increased dramatically. Previously the credit was up to 10% of the cost of the improvement not to exceed $500.00. Under the new provision, the credit is up to 30%, not to exceed 1500.00. The credits are available for the 2 years (2009 / 2010). It is important to note that along with the increased credit came a higher energy standard to meet to be eligible for the credit. BEWARE! - Most Energy Star rated products will not meet the new criteria. For both doors and windows, the new requirements are that they must be certified at a .30 U-value or below, and a .30 SHGC or below. It is also important to note that as in previous versions, the cost of the actual components (doors or windows) are eligible for the credit , while installation costs are excluded.
